Baby Steps To Becoming A Doula

Thanks to a recent email from a reader, I realized that I haven't mentioned my doula training in a little while! To update, yes, I am absolutely still training, however, I have decided to go with Birth Arts International instead of the course I'd previously chosen. BAI's holistic approach to the material speaks to me on a much more profound level and I'm incredibly happy to be training with them.

I've also found great support in the community on the AllDoulas forums. The ladies (and gentlemen!) on this site are so helpful, kind & knowledgeable -- such an incredible wealth of information! I'm trying to take it all in one step at a time. It's been great to meet up with some local doulas to chat about their work and to start making connections. There are just a handful in our city & it's fabulous to be able to network & strengthen the doula work being done here.

I'm also happy to report that I'll be attending my first birth in November! A friend's 3rd child is due just before Remembrance Day and I am absolutely honoured to be welcomed to her birth! For my BAI certification I need to attend 5 qualifying births and I'm so excited to get started. (That being said, if you're local and know anyone who would enjoy the presence of a doula-in-training, please pass on my information & I'd be happy to serve!)

That's all for now, mes amis, though I'll try to keep you more up to date on my training progress.

Hmmmm...
I am due September 7th and am still undecided on the VBAC vs repeat c-section issue. It keeps me up at night as I play the pros and cons. Obviously I would love a natural birth, but the little risk of possible death of me or the babe is frightening beyond words. I have read Ina May's words and the VBAC companion, but the fact that there is any risk is bothersome....
Blah,blah,blah...I am curious about the doula presence {we will have a midwife just as last time}...but I like the intuition aspect of the doula...
Anyway, I may be interested. What is the cost?

Oh gosh, I would be so honored to be including in your experience :)
While I'm in training I've decided not to charge a fee -- I think some people do because they believe they won't be taken seriously enough if they don't, but for me personally, the experience is payment enough!

Thank you for sharing your update Desiree.
I'm so excited for you to be taking this journey-it must feel amazing to take the role of a doula during someone's birth.

I think it's so awesome that you're becoming a doula. We had a doula for Evan's birth and it was so amazing. She really helped me through the experience. My husband is quite squeamish so he says it's the best money we ever spent b/c it took so much stress off of him.
