And She Lived Her Life Surrounded By Books

I am a busy bookish bee! Surrounded by piles of birthy books, some finished, some started, some waiting for my greedy fingers to gobble them up. Some purchased especially for my course, some owned previously, some found waiting for me in used book stores and thrift shops.

My doula certification is moving along nicely. My goal is to have everything completely finished and handed in by my next, next birthday (as in not next month, but one year after). Why the long time allowance? Mostly this is to ensure I'm able to attend a multitude of different births, ie. a good mix of hospital, home, water, high risk & other varying situations so that my experience will be as broad as possible. I want to give myself time to be exposed to all manner of the craft before finishing my certification process. And I'm enjoying every step of the way. Each time I hand in an assignment or project, I feel blessed and ecstatic. I'm getting chills here people.

Just a few of the birth related books you'll find scattered about my house.

Tonight, I will spend the rest of my waking moments nose deep in a delicious tome. I can't get enough. I am currently reading four books at once... including Ina May Gaskin's Spiritual Midwifery, which is one that I keep coming back to. Anytime I feel discouraged by an upsetting birth story in the news on through someone's blog, I return to Ina May to get grounded.

Birth is beautiful. It really is. And her stories shine so true.

They caress my heart.
