A Little Love For Fleck: Grow Your World

Maybe you guys know that I'm a bit of a geek, but perhaps you wouldn't take me to be a gamer. However, back in the day (circa 2005-2009) I had an addiction. That addiction, was World of Warcraft. I essentially quit after Gretchen was born, but still dabbled here and there when she was tiny. These days, there just aren't enough hours in the day, and the game has changed so much that I'm not especially interested anymore. That being said, I was recently given an opportunity to test out a new game (still in beta) which compare itself in some ways to WoW.

The game is called Fleck, and it can be played online or on an iPad. Since I don't own such a fancy device, I gave the online version a try. It's actually pretty cute. Still in it's beta form, it has its quirks, but the game has great potential. Basically, it's a social game which takes place on a map of the world (Google maps style), so you can actually walk through your own neighbourhood, place your home, tend your little garden (similar to Farmville) and even better -- counter zombie attacks. Yup. They had me at zombies. The whole idea is very sweet.

Here's my little house, with my tiny garden (in it's starting stages). Cute, right? In game, you can visit all sorts of real places -- in the US, a good part of Canada and Mexico.

Some spots get really busy... like when I took a wee trip to the Statue of Liberty:

Definitely a popular spot.

My fav part of the game, is chatting with other members and planing little zombie fights. Like other MMOs, you can team up and fight bigger monsters together. The actual fighting in game is very basic, but my guess is that things will change as the game grows. They really have something here, and for a game that's still in beta, you can colour me impressed. It'll be neat to see what changes they make as time goes on.

I can definitely see how folks can get mighty addicted to a game like this -- it's happened to me before -- but as for now, I'm happy to just check on it every few days to see what's happening, topple a few purple monsters and carry on. Everyone needs a little mindless fun now and then, eh? Doesn't hurt that the entire game is extra adorable in every way.

Ironically, the game makes me crave springtime so that I can ACTUALLY garden again in my yard. Ha.

To give it a try, visit Fleck.com, or download it through the app store for your iPad.
