World Breastfeeding Week: You Can't Phase Me

In celebration of World Breastfeeding Week I breastfed Gretchen in her Ergo on the city bus today and managed to make no less than five folks incredibly uncomfortable.

I actually felt quite accomplished.

I almost enjoyed seeing a head jerk back, a glance averted -- my favourite was the woman who shielded her eyes with her hand like a visor.

And I proudly continued to nurse until our stop where I pushed the button, got off the bus and nursed all the way down the street to our house.

You can can't phase me, public transportation!

This girl can and will nurse, anywhere & everywhere.

Happy WBW, mes amis!

oh honestly, it's just silly the reactions that some people have.

I don't think it's really surprising that people aren't expecting to go out and see a stranger's boob on a public bus especially where you're sitting in such closeness and have nothing to do but look around. I don't say this in a rude way, everyone is free to breastfeed in public if they please but even so it's still not THAT common, I think the last time I saw someone breastfeeding in public was like almost 5 months ago at Disney world. That's not often at all...

Its ok for people to feed their children a bottle in public but God forbid we feed them the way nature intended, from their mother's breast.

This world is backwards!

I'm a fairly modest person and I grew up in a really conservative culture. So when I had my first baby I had no desire to b'feed because I knew I'd end up in the back room somewhere feeding my baby. By the time the 2nd one came, I was enthused and tried it. I was still modest, I would feed in front of my father-in-law and he didn't even know what I was doing!! And if I have more, you can bet I'll be pulling out the boob... not only is it healthier for both mom and baby, it's also MUCH handier than trying to find a way to heat up a bottle when you're "on the town"...

Nice job! I saw a mom b'feeding at a restaurant recently and I was proud of her. I think the more we come out of the back rooms, the better it is for everyone.

Melissa: It's true that it's not expected -- which I think is a real shame. I wish it was a more common sight!

Mikki Roo: It's great how good we can get as discretely nursing if need be -- I've often been out for a walk, nursing Gretchen in the sling or Ergo and no one notices.

To everyone: Thank you for your comments & support!

This is so inspiring to me, being that I do love the idea of being a mama someday: I hope I have your sense of nature being the right thing to follow regardless of those around who fear and misunderstand it: you are righteous and brave.
