What Mama Wore: Thinking About San Diego

I really love my footless tights, mes amis, but I fought the tights/blouse combo for a long time. And I really can't explain why.

Expect this getup to make an appearance (or two) at BlogHer'11 next week. Cozy & just breezy enough for summertime. (Five days... 12345 days til I hop a plane to California. Oh my.)

Shirt: H&M
Tights: H&M
Necklace: Blue Balloon
Ring: Suzy Shier

Isn't that ring ridiculous? I bought it because the entire time I was searching the jam-packed jewelry rack (2 for $5) I couldn't stop thinking, "What on EARTH is this?" And now I'm loving it, despite the fact that my middle finger will soon be green, I'm sure.

PS. My pedicure is holding up much better than I'd thought it would... especially with a toddler stomping on me all day long. Colour me impressed. (Mani time?)

Small Style No. 16

Hmm, so as soon as I sat down to write this post last night (after a busy day of playdates, sushi, BlogHer prep and Twitter party love with my fabulous Mom Spark Media crew) Gretchen woke up and needed some seriously snuggling before she fell back asleep... and shortly after, I hit the sack as well. So! One day late, here's this week's dose of Small Style -- featuring the fabulous vintage dress spotted by my dear friend Karen on our last thrifting trip!

Great Minds

My yurt-talk must be catching on.

Last night, as she was falling asleep, Gretchen said: "Mama, when we move inna new house wif da chickens? Da yurt? Dat be nice."

I'm glad we're on the same page.

guess what

PS. More about these cute little butts soon, I promise.

Simple Summer Fun

Want to know what's guaranteed to entertain Gretchen on a sunny afternoon? It involves a bowl of water, a brush & food colouring.

summertime

A few weeks ago, Gretchen had wet hands (from puddle splashing) and wiped them on our concrete porch. The darkened effect excited her SO much that each day we've been "painting" with a toothbrush and water and sometimes a few drops of food colouring (just because it looks neat in the bowl).

Simple. Fun, Zero cleanup. Love it!

Yurt Love

I can't stop thinking about yurts.

Honestly, I've been spending hours upon hours over the last few weeks researching yurt life and trying to come up with a plan to make it happen somehow. What a beautiful way to live.

Undocumented Living

I think about minimalist living every single day. I think about sustainable lifestyles -- I think about getting rid of 90% of what I own and getting back to the earth. Digging in and settling. Shifting with the seasons and warming my heart.

There are so many ideas and dreams brewing in my head right now. Eventually they'll have to get out and make something of themselves.

The One Where I Gush About Local Talent

Tonight I just want to share a bit of the insane musical prowess that I'm blessed enough to have in my life. My friend Meagh sings in Tin Vespers & is one of my nearest & dearest. She also happens to be one of Gretchen's godparents & way back in the day, we lived together. I heart her more than words.

And I promise you will feel fantastic after listening to this.

Have a wonderful evening, mes amis.

Positively Pampered

Have you ever put something off, and off, and off, and off and then when you FINALLY do it, you think to yourself, "Oh my word, WHY haven't I been doing this all along??"

I had one of those moments yesterday. About pedicures.

our very first pedicures

Have you had one of these things, people?? Becuase until yesterday, I'd never tried it and I'm fairly certain the last time I had polish on my toes was sometime in highschool... or at least university. So far back that I actually can't remember at all. I don't even own nail polish. There's not a bottle hidden anywhere in my whole house. However, as part of my pre-BlogHer'11 pampering, I figured I'd go for broke and see what all the fuss was about.

And now I'm hooked.

The fact that I got to soak my tootsies and have them all scrubbed, scuffed and prettied up for about half and hour was pure bliss. The chair massaged my back, my feet were happy & they brought me a diet soda. These should be mandatory. Especially for mamas... or anyone else who just needs a little break.

our very first pedicures

My lovely friend Claire came along with me (it was her 1st time too) and we felt completely pampered the entire time. We also giggled together as our toes are rather ticklish, and some parts of the pedi were enough to have us gripping the sides of the chair, trying not to burst our guts laughing. All in all, it was fantastic.

I feel like such a girl right now, a feeling I'm really not at all used to in my somewhat tomboyish, super clumsy, uncoordinated life.

Heck, I might even go back for a manicure before heading to San Diego.

05. Still swooning over this happy honour!

06. I'd feel so luxurious wearing a sleep mask to bed at BlogHer'11.

07. Never heard of this before, but I'd really like to taste them.

08. I ought to plant these next year.

09. Another blog that I seriously adore.

Someone Call Mensa

Small Style No. 15

small style
Happy Small Style day from my tiny little jumper! Once again I managed to snap a few pics on the way to daycare -- her last day of daycare for the summer, as they are breaking for August. I love trying take photos of her hopping around, mid air, carefree & oh so sweet.

Shortly after, she ran down the street, eager to meet her pals for a day of play (while her mama stays very still inside, enjoying the AC before her downtown pedicure trip this afternoon).

Linking up over at Mama Loves Papa, as per usual. I can't believe I get to meet Morgan in just TWO short weeks! (BlogHer'11, here we come!)

PS. Can you believe I've never had a pedicure before?? Off I go!

The One Where The Fawn Gushes Because Her Heart Is Simply Bursting

Over the last few days I've had some really wonderful chats with some of my favourite people and my heart is so full of love for their kind words & warm hugs. Most of the folks in my life, by now, get the gist of what's been going on with the boy & myself, and so a great deal of them have been more than happy to be sounding boards, as I attempt to make sense of the whirlwind that is my life at this time.

Even when I feel lower than dirt, squashed & forlorn, I am always astonished, yet ever so grateful for those people surrounding me who are just so good. For those who bring me tea & berries, for those who hold my hand, for those who love my daughter, for those who send me lovely messages to buck up my spirits when all seems near-lost, for those who know me well, for those who care deeply -- for all of you, I pour out streams from my heart in awe and honour.

This month has been near nightmarish, however, somehow also empowering. Choices and opportunities for change, fresh starts and new beginnings... reasons to let vulnerability soar to the highest of highs. Something will have to give in the next little while, and knowing you lovelies might be along for the ride, gives me just that much more hope.

It'll be alright, it'll be alright, it'll be alright, it'll be okay.

In 15 days I'll be boarding a plane, BlogHer-bound, traveling 4200km from my doorstep, for four entire days of fabulous insanity. For those attending, I hope to meet as many of you as humanly possible. I feel this shall be an emotional trip & I know that I will return home rejuvenated in some way.

I have faith in the future, dear friends. In happiness and a beautiful life.

And I know that's what'll get me through whatever the world might throw my way.

Thanks, My Girl Thursday!

I'm basically all a'blush right now after reading My Girl Thursday's super sweet post this morning. What a doll! Chantilly (the lovely lass behind MGT) has started a brand new series called Blog Fandom and I'm honoured to be a part of her first post!

Be sure to hop on over to visit My Girl Thursday to check out all of her neato features, DIYs and other cheeky what not -- she makes me smile a whole darn lot.

Small Style No. 14

This morning marked the third time that Gretchen rode her bike to daycare. To be fair, we only live a block away, but there was still something so grownup about watching her look both ways and cross the street next to me -- bump! -- into the curb across the way. She's so sweet, and so independent.
